Alcolismi

Nel weekend giustamente si chiude bottega, ma vedo che nessuno sta considerando più di tanto l’articolo di Stephen King su Raymond Carver, New York Times di ieri. King recensisce l’uscita in contemporanea della biografia di Carver e della raccolta completa dei racconti. Articolo non molto ispirato in realtà, presumibilmente una marchettina per promuovere il nuovo libro, ma il semplice accostamento dei nomi fa una certa sensazione. Qualche passaggio si salva:

Longtime A.A.’s know that drunks like Carver are master practitioners of the geographical cure, refusing to recognize that if you put an out-of-control boozer on a plane in California, an out-of-control boozer is going to get off in Chicago. Or Iowa. Or Mexico.

Oppure il pezzetto sull’amicizia alcolica tra Ray e John Cheever (di cui quest’anno è uscita un’altra biografia alquanto etilica). King pone un po’ a fatica il vessato interrogativo: sapere che un famoso scrittore come essere umano era una merda di un certo livello (vedi il rapporto di Carver con la prima moglie che lo ha sostenuto moralmente e finanziariamente per vent’anni di alcolismo, ripagata con una bottiglia rotta in testa e $10.000 dopo il divorzio) mi rovina il piacere della lettura?

Never even cared about Rick Moody

La lunghezza ideale di un post è per me oggetto di ripetute ruminazioni. La linea di pensiero in me dominante è che la brevità sia sempre auspicabile; la gente non ha comunque tempo di leggere, quindi tanto vale fare di questo stato di cose una virtù. Poi a volte mi capita di domare la fregola di cambiare pagina ogni sette secondi e leggere un articolo lunghissimo per intero, come quello di Rick Moody su The Rumpus. Il tema doveva essere, “parla di una canzone pop talmente orribile che sia impossibile capire perchè alla gente piace(va)”. Moody prende un commercialissimo pezzo di Steve Winwood, “Higher Love”, e ci imbastisce sopra un lungo ragionamento su Reagan, la musica degli anni ‘80, e i dischi di Led Zeppelin, Traffic e Pink Floyd prestatigli quando aveva dodici anni dalla sorella poi scomparsa prematuramente. Davvero notevole. A volte la lunghezza ci vuole. I commenti dei lettori, cui Moody risponde quasi in tempo reale, sono forse ancora meglio. E appunto, solo con un pezzo così articolato si può innescare un dialogo così vivace, credo. Dategli un’occhiata se avete un minuto, o qualcosa di più.
